Legislation for universal free school meals has not yet passed in Wisconsin. The Wisconsin State Assembly did introduce a bill to establish universal free school meals in 2021, but it failed to pass in 2022.
The Wisconsin Healthy School Meals for All Coalition continues to actively advocate for universal free school meals for all students, and Governor Tony Evers proposed and prioritized free school meals for all Wisconsin students in his 2025 budget. However, the “Healthy Meals, Healthy Kids” plan including universal free lunch did not make it into the final budget.
