A Win for Staying Power

PY16 Headshot_Zachary SilverService Member Zack Silver just scored a big win for the Paterson, NJ, community he serves: a $20,000 grant from the New Jersey Healthy Communities Network to build out nutrition and physical fitness programming in schools. Working with his service site, United Way of Passaic County, he not only had a big hand in winning the award for two of his schools but he also will be taking the lead on implementing the action plan. Zack will equip the schools to educate students “in a wide range of wellness topics, which will be vital in preparing them for a life of knowledgeable and healthy decisions,” Zack says. “It means that they will be exposed to new foods through cooking, tasting, and gardening nearly every week, and they will have opportunities to strengthen their bodies and minds in completely novel ways.” Zack will also lead training sessions to engage teachers in the new programming, while establishing a wellness committee to ensure this big opportunity benefits students for years to come.
