Policy Landscape and Our Work
In South Carolina, S0147 (Free School Meals) is currently in committee. The bill would amend South Carolina law so that eligible schools that participate in the School Breakfast Program would be required to provide breakfast and lunch without charge to all students. South Carolina also recently enacted a bill that expands access to free school meals by allowing schools with a high percentage of low-income students to offer free meals to all students. The proposal also creates a new law banning “lunch shaming,” prohibiting schools from punishing students over unpaid meal debt.
