
Fayette County Public Schools
Widely considered the Horse Capital of the World, Fayette County located in the heart of central Kentucky’s Bluegrass region and is the county seat of Lexington. Fayette County Public Schools represent one of the state’s most diverse communities, with 96 languages spoken in the district’s English language learning programs. The spirit of collaboration in this community has forged robust links between local food access and culinary innovation, and partnerships with food and equity focused organizations such as FoodChain, SeedLeaf, Geomancer Permaculture, and now FoodCorps support the district’s goal of modeling a more resilient, sustainable food system.
A member of the Green Schools National Network, Fayette County Public Schools has been awarded by the U.S. Department of Education’s Green Ribbon Schools program every year since 2012. As part of the School Sustainability Leadership Network, FoodCorps members in Fayette County support initiatives such as the establishment of outdoor classrooms and instructional alignment between garden education and core curriculum standards.
In collaboration with site partners, FoodCorps Kentucky supports nearly 20 schools across the state with hands-on experiences in gardening, nutrition, and food preparation. There’s a place for everyone, as FoodCorps members build power and exchange ideas between urban and rural communities across Kentucky. Join FoodCorps to serve up change with a cohort of justice leaders and a network of community-centered changemakers!
Preferred Qualifications
- Passion for working with youth
- Interest in gardening
- Interest in food education
- Ability to speak multiple languages is helpful
- Access to transportation is highly recommended
