Oxnard School District

Oxnard School District has 20 schools, serving grades K-8, with 14,500 enrolled students. In 2018-19 the district transitioned to Community Eligibility Provision where all students are served breakfast and lunch and supper meals at no cost. Child Nutrition Services, which houses the FoodCorps program in the district, strives to support student academic success and promote healthful eating habits that lead to lifelong positive nutrition practices. It is the district’s mission to ensure a culturally diverse education for each student in a safe, healthy and supportive environment that prepares students for college and career opportunities.

The Service Member in Oxnard is placed at two elementary schools, where they extend educational opportunities from the classroom into the cafeteria and garden learning spaces. One particular shared goal between the department and the FoodCorps programming is reducing food waste through varied interventions, such as appropriate meal development, Service Member led curriculum, garden access, Smarter Lunchroom initiatives, cafeteria youth leadership programs, composting, and more. The Service Member also has the opportunity to participate in many Ventura County Farm to School Collaborative events and initiatives to build local and community purchasing power and a stronger, healthier farm to school program for the entire county.

Service in California connects you to a legacy and future of innovative Farm to School programming, vibrant school communities, and equitable access to nourishing school meals. FoodCorps California Service Members are part of a 34-person cohort serving in communities across the state. California service members are important members of the school and district community, lead nutrition and garden lessons, promote social and emotional wellness, and support initiatives such as School Meals For All, California Thursdays/California Food for California Kids, and Harvest of the Month programs by running taste tests, supporting meal programs, and making mealtime an educational and socially fulfilling time.

Oxnard School District will graduate from FoodCorps in Summer 2023 and is not looking for Service Member Applicants at this time.
