The C.S. Mott Group for Sustainable Food Systems at Michigan State University engages communities in improving the access and availability of locally-produced food. Service Members across the state help support the goals of the Michigan Good Food Charter.
Service Sites:
Michigan’s FoodCorps Service Members expand school gardens and nutrition education in urban schools in Grand Rapids, Flint, Ypsilanti, and Detroit, and in rural schools in northwest Lower Michigan. All of these areas are struggling economically and benefit from the service of FoodCorps Members.
YMCA of Greater Grand Rapids (Grand Rapids, MI): Members assist with education activities at urban school garden sites and help students organize the YMCA’s youth farmers’ market.
Michigan Land Use Institute (Traverse City, MI): Members collaborate with MSU Extension, SEEDS, and Institute for Sustainable Living and Design to develop and maintain school gardens, resolve obstacles to supplying locally grown food in school cafeterias, and engage in developing promotional materials and curriculum that supports local food efforts.
Food Systems Economic Partnership (Ann Arbor, MI): Service Members help improve access to healthy foods in urban school cafeterias and collaborate with Farm to School programs to provide education in the classroom and school gardens.
Crim Fitness Foundation (Flint, MI): Members link school food service to local food, engage students in hands-on learning through school gardens, and assist with nutrition education in the classroom.
