Policy Landscape and Our Work
While Utah does not have any school meals for all legislation, it is expanding its free school meals program. Starting July 1, 2025, students who previously qualified for reduced-price meals will now receive them for free. This change, part of HB 100, aims to eliminate barriers to accessing nutritious meals for students. The bill also prohibits stigmatizing students who cannot afford meals and encourages reducing food waste. While this is a significant step, it falls shy of a universal free school meals program for all students.
