Baltimore City Public Schools
Baltimore City Public Schools (City Schools) provides an experiential Farm to School (F2S) education program that connects students to nature and food systems. Programmatic offerings currently include farm-based education experiences at Great Kids Farm (GKF), the district’s educational farm, and school-based (farm-to-classroom) programs that focus on cooking, nutrition, gardening, and food waste.
FoodCorp members will be supporting Great Kids Farm. Members will facilitate and instruct small groups of up to 20 students in hands-on farm activities as part of field trips, answer student questions and inspire curiosity about the field-trip topic, maintain work area in a clean and orderly condition. Corps members will also assist with field trip program evaluation and data tracking, provide occasional farm tours for visitors and act as a spokesperson for Great Kids Farm programming. Corps members will also provide support for other Great Kids Farm and Food and Nutrition programming including Ag-Tivity kit material assembly and distribution; and planting, harvesting or animal care to support field trips, taste testing, community outreach and staff development and engagement.
Preferred Qualifications
- An interest in and enthusiasm for working with elementary school students, learning and teaching about food systems, agriculture & animal husbandry required! Experience working with students preferred, but not required.
- Position requires moderate physical exertion, i.e. standing or walking approximately 90% of work time, being outdoors in all different weather conditions, including very hot and cold weather, lifting and carrying small farm equipment and supplies up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to maintain flexibility in a sometimes unpredictable work environment.
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships with others through a willingness to participate in a culture of open and honest communication.
- Must be able to provide own transportation to and from the worksite at Great Kids Farm – 6601 Baltimore National Pike, Catonsville, MD 21228
- Performs and promotes all activities in compliance with equal employment and nondiscrimination policies; follows federal laws, state laws, school board’s policies and the professional standards.
