
Garden School Foundation
Garden School Foundation provides in-depth, garden-based education to youth at Title I schools in Los Angeles, strengthening connections between food justice, environmental stewardship, and community health. By using the full transformative potential of school gardens as teaching sites, GSF nurtures a healthy and mindful generation of children that care for their bodies, their communities, and the earth.
FoodCorps Service Members placed with Garden School Foundation will serve at the 1-acre flagship school garden at 24th St Elementary as well as at Jackson Elementary School. Major focuses include delivering garden and nutrition curriculum, cafeteria programming, co-facilitation of schoolwide health and wellness goals, learning garden maintenance practices, and facilitating free farmer’s markets.
Service in California connects you to a legacy and future of innovative Farm to School programming, vibrant school communities, and equitable access to nourishing school meals. FoodCorps California Service Members are part of a 34-person cohort serving in communities across the state. California service members are important members of the school and district community, lead nutrition and garden lessons, promote social and emotional wellness, and support initiatives such as School Meals For All, California Thursdays/California Food for California Kids, and Harvest of the Month programs by running taste tests, supporting meal programs, and making mealtime an educational and socially fulfilling time.
Preferred Qualifications
- Spanish fluency is helpful
- Interest in working with children and high needs communities
- Passion for equity and food justice
- Knowledge of plant systems, gardening, and food systems
- Collaborative teamwork as well as comfort working independently
- We welcome applicants from folks who are interested in learning farming or have experience
