Sebasticook Valley Elementary School-RSU 19

Sebasticook Valley Elementary School RSU 19 is not seeking new service members for the 2024-2025 school year.

Sebasticook Valley Elementary School (SVES) is in Newport, Maine and is conveniently located halfway between two vibrant cities Bangor and Waterville. Newport sits at the crossroads of Maine where three major highways converge, meaning there is easy driving access to State Parks in the north, Acadia National Park and Belfast in the east, Rangeley Lakes region, ski resorts in the west, and southern Maine’s more urban centers. The service member would serve at the Sebasticook Valley Elementary School (SVES) and collaborate with both the Somerset Elementary service member and the garden coordinator from the neighboring Etna Dixmont Plymouth Elementary School (EDS).

Sebasticook Valley Elementary has a 20 acre campus and is in the early stages of developing the infrastructure for a sustainable garden and outdoor learning program for students and the community. During the winter of 2020, an outdoor classroom was constructed and is accompanied by a hoop house and garden, as well as an existing fruit tree orchard. The intent of having FoodCorps at this site is to support the development of a program that provides in depth, experiential learning for SVES students, and to include them in the process of understanding where our food comes from and developing lifelong habits of healthy living. The garden will be utilized in the instruction of environmental science, life cycles, soil science, and nutrition, and will serve to create traditions and learning opportunities at every grade level at SVES, extending the learning into the community by inviting in community experts and stakeholders. The service member will work with the school team to further develop and implement a comprehensive plan for the garden spaces that will include students and community volunteers. The service member would also work with the kitchen to support connections between local food providers and the school kitchen and district director of nutrition.
