Policy Landscape and Our Work

In Washington, DC, efforts to secure universal free school meals continue to move forward. After the introduction of Bill 25-35 in 2023 and related public hearings, a renewed push came with the introduction of Bill 26-0108—the Universal School Meals Amendment Act of 2025—on January 31, 2025. This legislation aims to guarantee free meals and snacks for all students in public schools, public charter schools, and eligible private schools across the District.

While earlier proposals saw limited progress, the reintroduction signals ongoing momentum and growing recognition of the need to ensure all students have consistent access to nutritious food during the school day. FoodCorps and our partners remain engaged in supporting policies that advance school meal access throughout the District.
