Policy Landscape and Our Work
According to recent state data, in 2023–24, 118 out of 150 Alabama school districts and charter schools participated in the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP), which allows eligible schools to offer free meals to all students.
In addition to this effort, Alabama will roll out a new grocery assistance program for children during the summer months. Beginning in 2025, eligible school-age children will receive a one-time grocery benefit of $120 through the Alabama SUN Bucks initiative. Families will receive the funds on a pre-loaded card that can be used to help cover the cost of groceries when school is out. This initiative is supported by a $10 million investment recently approved by state lawmakers.
