One of the largest districts in Maine; Lewiston Public Schools looks to incorporate local fresh ingredients into students meals for Breakfast and Lunch.

Lewiston Public Schools

Lewiston, an old mill town along the Androscoggin River, serves as an urban hub and gateway into rural Western Maine. While Lewiston is one of the largest cities in Maine, it maintains the small town feel typical of all communities in our rural state. Lewiston has deep Franco- American roots and is home to several annual festivals including a balloon festival and an acclaimed modern dance festival at Bates College each summer. It is equidistant from the ocean and the Western Maine mountains. Lewiston has seen a significant demographic transformation in the last fifteen years, with the arrival of ~5,000 Somali, Somali Bantu and Central African immigrants and refugees. This community has expanded the cultural diversity of the city, which is now home to nearly a dozen Halal stores and ethnic restaurants.

Lewiston is part of a three district partnership with the Lisbon and Auburn School Departments, both neighboring districts with many similar and unique attributes. Lewiston is the largest of the three districts and we serve more school meals per day than any other district in Maine. We are continually working to bring moe options to our students and increase participation in our meal programs, recently bolstered by Maine’s landmark school meals for all legislation, for which Lewiston was and is a champion. Our FoodCorps School Nutrition Member will collaborate closely with service members in both Lisbon and Auburn to help achieve our mutual goals. We look forward to having you as a part of our team!
