Maine School Administrative District 17
The Oxford Hills region is located in picturesque western Maine, where outdoor opportunities–including skiing, hiking, and water sports– abound! Many small towns partner together in this district, giving it both a small-town feel and the amenities of a bigger city.
The Oxford Hills School District is a leader in outdoor education, which is a tenet of our strategic plan. All elementary schools have outdoor classrooms, gardens, and trails/playgrounds; sites at the middle and high school will be completed for the start of the 2024-25 school year! You will be joining a dynamic team of people and community organizations who support outdoor and place-based learning. The FoodCorps Service Member will serve Oxford and Harrison Elementary schools. These schools already have “Garden Champions” and established partnerships with our Outdoor Learning Coach, our Roberts Farm Experiential Learning Center teacher, Healthy Oxford Hills, Western Maine Land Trust, and Lakes Environmental Association.
When you serve in Maine, you are joining a family of 12 Service members serving all across the state. We connect both virtually and in person, spend time together and learn, and enjoy all the natural beauty and excellent food culture Maine has to offer. No matter where you are, you have the support of the cohort and FoodCorps Maine staff, Malia and Ryan who both grew up in Maine and love sharing all that is great about this state with service members who we hope will put down roots here and continue to be an important part of Maine.
Preferred Qualifications
- The ability to work with others, including students, school staff, volunteers, and community partners
- Experience with gardening and/or outdoor learning, especially in doing so with elementary-aged children, is preferred
- Qualities of being self-motivated, flexible, and able to work independently and as an effective team player are essential
