Today, the USDA proposed changes to school meal rules that could jeopardize kids’ health by potentially reducing the variety of vegetables available on lunch lines. The rule would also increase the availability of less healthy options for a-la-carte purchase. These changes could set back progress being made across schools in the U.S. that have been providing students with healthier school meals under current federal guidelines.
At FoodCorps, we work alongside dedicated school food professionals who are successfully doing the hard and important work of serving delicious, appealing, and healthy meals that kids love to eat. The cafeteria is the school’s largest classroom and the place where kids can learn about and fall in love with healthy foods. Rather than limit options, let’s provide resources to support variety and healthy choices for students.
We oppose any changes to school meals that will undermine student health. Instead, we urge the USDA and Congress to take action to strengthen and support school meals. In the coming days, we will read the details of the changes the USDA is proposing and will provide a more detailed analysis and model comments that the public can submit in response to this proposed rule.
