What We're Looking For

More than anything, FoodCorps is looking for candidates who really want to be FoodCorps service members. Successful FoodCorps service members are people who have:

  • Passion for building a healthier future for schoolchildren
  • Commitment to working hard in order to make a difference
  • Demonstrated leadership ability
  • Motivation to serve full-time in a limited resource community
  • Roots in the community they wish to serve
  • Perseverance in the face of challenges and creativity in finding solutions
  • Respect for diversity of opinion, experience, and background
  • Experience working in or studying food systems, agriculture, public health, education, community organizing, nutrition or public service
  • Desire to gain hands-on experience for their career

To be considered for a FoodCorps service member position, you must:
  • Be 18 years or older by the start of service (September 1, 2016)
  • Be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or lawful permanent resident of the United States
  • Hold a high school diploma, GED or equivalent


Preparing Your Application

General Tips

FoodCorps receives thousands of applications. The candidates who are selected to move to the interview round are the ones who use specific, relevant examples demonstrating their unique perspective, background, motivation or experience. When preparing your application remember:

  • Read all the application materials before beginning your application.
  • Your application is your introduction to FoodCorps. Make it shine!
  • Proofread your application materials well. Ensure there are no grammatical or spelling errors.
  • Be specific and use examples.
  • Have fun!

    Personal Statement Guidelines

    FoodCorps relies on the personal statement portion of the application to really get to know the applicant. Your personal statement is your opportunity to highlight and explain your personal motivations for joining FoodCorps, your commitment to FoodCorps’ Mission and Vision, your experiences working in or studying concepts related to FoodCorps, your unique contributions to FoodCorps service, and how you expect FoodCorps to impact your personal and professional life beyond your year of service.

    Your personal statement should:

  • Be prepared ahead of time and proofread to ensure there are no errors.
  • Effectively and logically connect your ideas and experiences to FoodCorps’ mission.
  • Include specific examples and avoid generalizations wherever possible.
  • Help us understand why you’re committed to public service in general and FoodCorps in particular.
  • Tell us about you.

    What We Evaluate For

    The FoodCorps selection process is designed to help us identify candidates whose unique perspectives, experiences, and motivations will make them a successful FoodCorps service member. There's no one characteristic we're looking for in a potential FoodCorps service member; we just want to assemble the most passionate, diverse, hard-working, motivated and fun team we can. We feel it’s important that:

  • Each state includes some service members who are local to the service site communities and some members from other places.
  • Our corps represents service members with different backgrounds, different strengths, and different levels of experience.
  • Service members are good communicators, trustworthy friends, proven leaders, and self-driven go-getters.
  • This work is challenging—there will be obstacles to climb and foundations to build—but also fun and rewarding. We want FoodCorps members who are going places, and we want them to know how to have a good time getting there.


    FoodCorps scores first round candidate's on their:

    • EXPERIENCE: What level of experience does the candidate exhibit in the fields of food systems, food policy, culinary arts, education, public health, and/or organizing for community change? How rich are their experiences? Does the candidate indicate any experiences with public service or working in lower-income communities of need?
    • KNOWLEDGE: How complex is the applicant’s understanding of the food, education, health, and social justice contexts in which FoodCorps service members operate?
    • MOTIVATION: What level of passion to participate in FoodCorps does this candidate express? Is there evidence of commitment to the goals and methods of FoodCorps, including public service?
    • PERSONAL STORY: Does this candidate have a powerful personal history? Or have they sought out unique educational, professional, or academic experiences that would make them an amazing FoodCorps member?
    • LEADERSHIP: What is the potential for the candidate to contribute as indicated by their knowledge and leadership ability? Does this candidate exhibit the confidence and maturity necessary to be an effective FoodCorps Member?
    • POTENTIAL TO BENEFIT: How much will the candidate benefit from FoodCorps? Will they continue to stay involved in these fields after their term of service?
