Government Shutdown Risks Millions of Families’ Well-Being

Today marks the start of a new federal fiscal year, and unfortunately, Congress has failed to pass legislation to keep the government fully funded. FoodCorps is deeply disheartened that instead of advancing policies that will feed our kids, our nation’s leaders have brought the country to a standstill.

All Americans feel the effect of a government shutdown. But for the millions of families who count on government programs to help them eat, live, and be well, the repercussions will be especially harmful.

A number of government-funded programs have been forced to halt their services almost immediately as a result of the shutdown. One affected program is the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC). Nearly seven million women (and their babies and children) qualify for food, education, and other services through WIC.

Because of the way WIC is funded, benefits will be disrupted as early as next week if the shutdown continues. Families who count on programs like WIC have just days to figure out how to feed their children.

Programs like SNAP are expected to continue because of pre-approved backup funds and carryover resources. But if the shutdown continues into October, programs funded by the USDA—like SNAP and school meals—will also be jeopardized. This government shutdown is taking food off the table for millions of families.

FoodCorps joins advocates nationwide in calling on Congress to act immediately. Every day of delay risks the livelihood of our nation’s families. Congress must pass legislation that reopens the government, fully funds WIC, and ensures that these vital programs continue without interruption.

We urge lawmakers to find a solution quickly, and get back to the work of helping communities thrive.
