We look forward to working with lawmakers to create the school food system our children deserve.

WASHINGTON, DC (Nov. 4, 2026)—As election results continue to roll in, FoodCorps is encouraged by the victories of candidates who have championed nourishing school meals, well-funded school nutrition programs, and other initiatives that serve to support child well-being.
“We are better positioned than ever to pass laws that bring nutritious, free school meals to the communities where children will most benefit from them,” said Mickeala Carter, Vice President of Policy and Communications at FoodCorps. “FoodCorps stands ready to work with newly elected officials across the country to develop policies that put our kids’ well-being first.”
FoodCorps is heartened to see wins for candidates who included school meals for all in their policy platforms, like Ohio Governor-Elect Dr. Amy Acton, Iowa Governor-Elect Rob Sand, and Nevada Governor-Elect Aaron Ford.
We know that nourishing, free meals in school help kids show up as their best selves. School meals for all policies support student nutrition, promote attendance and improved academics, and foster a sense of community in the cafeteria that shows all kids they belong.
And while FoodCorps hoped that North Dakota would make history in yesterday’s election by ushering in a statewide school meals for all policy at the polls, we remain encouraged by the potential ahead of us for these policies, the power of voting, and the future we’re creating for our kids. We look forward to working with lawmakers to create the school food system our children deserve.
ABOUT FOODCORPS
For 15 years, FoodCorps has championed child well-being through food in school. As a national nonprofit, FoodCorps works with students, families, and communities to make nourishing food the norm in cafeterias, classrooms, and school gardens. In collaboration with local partners, we advance schools’ capacity to provide nutritious meals, locally informed food education, and positive, vibrant experiences with food. Building on our school programming, we develop leaders, grow networks, and advocate for policies in service of every kid’s health and well-being. FoodCorps is working toward a future where all 50 million public school students access food education and nourishing, free meals in school.
